- Acid-Free:
- Materials used in printing, framing, and protecting artwork that has a neutral pH, which will prevent discoloring, stains, and damage to your print.
- Artis Proof:
- In offset reproductions, artist's proofs are additional prints not included in, but of the same quality as, the regular edition. In original prints, artis's proofs are the
first prints pulled, which are the truest prints in the edition because the plates and screens have not yet been worn down. Artist's proofs are distinguished by the abbreviation
AP and are numbered seperately; they often represent 10% of an edition and are slightly more expensive than the prints in the regular edition.
- Canvas Print:
- A reproduction in which an image is printed directly onto canvas.
- Canvas Transfer:
- A reproduction in which inks are chemically lifted off a piece of paper and applied to a piece of canvas.
- Certificate of Authenciticity:
- A warranty card or statement of authenticity of a limited edition print that records the title of the work, the artist's name, the edition size, and the print's number within
the edition, the release date, and materials used for reproduction.
- Conservation Edition:
- Prints created over and above the regular signed and numbered limited edition that are used specifically for fund-raising purposes.
- Digital Print:
- A reproduction in which a digital file of an origianl painting is printed by a special ink-jet printer that sprays ink directly onto the surface of a substrate. These prints, sometimes called
giclées or iris prints, can match the colors of the original with millions of possible hues.
- Distributor:
- A person or company responsible for marketing and selling prints and supplying prints to galleries. Sometimes the publisher and distributor are the same entity.
- Edition Size:
- The total number of prints printed, or pulled, of one particular image. Separate edition sizes are recorded for the signed and numbered prints, artist's proofs, and printer's proofs. This is the bottom number on the print.
- Hand Embellished:
- A term used to describe canvas prints to which color or washes have been added after the piece has been printed to enhance the artwork.
- Giclée Print:
- (pronounced "zhee-clay) A reproduction process that is digitally printed by spraying ink directly onto the paper or canvas. This method offers the highest degree of accuracy and can match the original colors with millions of possible hues.
- Limited Edition Print:
- A reproduction of an original work of art that is signed and swquently numbered by the artist. The total number of prints is fixed or limited by the artist or the publisher.
- Medium:
- The actual material the artist uses to create the art (oil paints, watercolors, etc.)
- Non-Glare Glass:
- Special glass used in framing that has a special anti-reflective etch or coating to reduce the glare from light.
- Open-Edition Print:
- A reproduction of an origianl work of art that is sometimes signed by the artist. The number of prints is not predetermined.
- Original Artwork:
- A one-of-a-kind image created by an artist that often sells for several thousand s of dollars.
- Paper Mats:
- Mat board usually made from wood pulp fibers that have been buffered to be environmentally friendly. This mat board is not recommended for use on limited edition prints.
- Printer's Proofs:
- Prints created over and above the regualr signed and numbered limited edition that are retained by the printer as a reference.
- Publisher:
- A person or company responsible for producing prints of an original work of art for public showing and sale.
- Publisher Sold Out:
- When the entire print edition is sold out wholesale and is no longer available to the dealers. It may still be possible to find this print for issue price in a gallery.
- Rag Mats:
- Archival quality mat board that is made from 100% rag fibers, are 100% acid-free (not buffered), and meet the Library of Congress standards for museum or conservation framing.
- Remarque:
- Small original sketches, painted drawings, or additional enhancements made by the artist, usually in the margin.
- Reproduction:
- An original work of art that has been replicated by photographic or other methods.
- Secondary Market Value:
- The reported price for a sold out limited edition, set by supply and demand. Unlike retail prices, secondary market prices can vary from one source to another.
- Sold Out:
- When all prints in a limited edition have been sold, the edition is sold out and prints must be bought and sold on the secondary market.
- Time-Limited Edition:
- An edition whose size is established by the number of orders a publisher receives during a set period of time.
- Transparency:
- A piece of film containing a picture that is color corrected and visible when light shines through it. A 35 mm slide is an example of a transparency.
